Freshmen year is a transitional year- for students, parents, and families as the dynamic at home often will shift during this time. Your children are on course to become independent learners. Our ultimate goal of Freshmen year is to instill in your children a greater sense of self-awareness. With self-awareness comes a more developed sense of confidence, and in turn a greater ability to advocate for oneself and to adjust learning and lifestyle habits accordingly. This is a process, an on-going process, and one that your children will be supported and guided through within our program.
Resource Rooms at CHHS
Resource rooms are classrooms where a special education program can be delivered to a student with a disability. It is for the student who qualifies for either a special class or regular class placement but needs some additional instruction in an individualized or small group setting for a portion of the day. Specific needs are supported in resource room as defined by the student's IEP (Individualized Educational Plan). In addition, while the student is in the general education classroom he or she will receive program modifications and testing accommodations as prescribed in their IEP. IEP goals are met and addressed using both skills lessons, as well as general education curriculum materials; which are differentiated in a way that will enhance each individual's learning experience.
Resource Room 9
We utilize a set rotating schedule here in Resource 9. This allows us to address students’ needs, instill a greater sense of self-awareness, and to promote good decision-making skills and mindfulness as we address students’ academic needs through the following “lenses.” This allows our program to be structured, yet flexible.
Choice Time: With guidance, students are allotted Choice Days. This allows them the forum to practice good decision-making skills. They can address homework, organize, prioritize, see teachers, etc. With this opportunity we see students become more independently mindful of their studies and responsibilities as learners.
Skills Lessons: Skills Lessons are individual, small group, or whole class instructional lessons. These may include, but are not limited to, lessons geared towards time-management, reading comprehension, the writing process, test-taking, how study for various subjects as the approach is often different, etc. These may also serve as a time to preview or review content material for students. For example, we may preview or review literary elements contained in a story they are reading, or a particular concept in Earth Science, etc. |
IEP Goals: We are explicitly and directly addressing students' IEP Goals. Students are individually introduced to their IEPs, Goals, Accommodations, Modifications, etc. On IEP Goal Days either I, or students, will select an IEP Goal to focus on for the period. All students have a copy of their Goals here in the classroom, where they access them regularly. Whenever possible, we are “marrying” an IEP Goal with the general education curriculum. This allows us to support students’ needs via the general education curriculum. For goals that do not coincide with the current general education curriculum, appropriate materials and tasks will be created and provided. |
